When I birthed this theme, I was completely focused on my January Organization. Every January I get in this "out with the old" mood...and I thought I'd photograph some of this spirit. But, as it turns out, I haven't gotten around to that. I often forget how busy January is. I never want to back into the swing of things after such a wonderful winter break. I've still got sugar plums dancing in my head, or something like that.
My family had some great ideas for this week's theme. The boys liked this one. {But of course my little super Star Wars nerds did.}

I threatened to use this one from the GoDaddy.com Bowl...

But after all was said and done...I drove down to the "Tracks" Thursday bright and early and shot this one.

I love the tone. It was shot at 6:30 am. Right out of the box, it was a little darker than I'd like it. So...I processed it with Nik Software's Define 2.0, then Nik Color Efex 4.0's Detail extractor at 25%, then I added an Ivory boost from Florabella's newest collection.

We're a group for Photography Enthusiast and Professionals all teaching and learning through each other by photographing to a theme each week. We post our photos to our Flickr group each week by Thursday Midnight and start a new theme each Friday. Each Friday we spotlight 10 photographers and tell why they are featured. Week 2, Our Favorites!

This time of year, I usually spend a lot of time in my attic. I go back back and forth, up and down, toting the boxed holiday treasures that brought me so much joy just a few short weeks ago back into hiding. While I'm up there, I'm always distracted by some packed away treasure - like my ancient CD collection {I regularly drag down some odd mix for my iPod like Pearl Jam & Ace of Base. Yes, I have the Ace of Base CD.} My attic, like many of you, contain a wealth of things generations couldn't bare to part with, and things that make you wonder why that's up there at all. Whether yours is empty or full, boxed or shelved, climb up or walk in; the attic is a fun place to stroll down memory lane. Well, except in the summer; in Alabama.
Week 2's Ellenburg Photography Project 52 theme of "From the Attic" was really a great "Get to know you theme" - you guys have some really cool stuff up there! I loved the stories. I loved the hints on your processing. You guys are going to be great fun this year.

This shot was taken Thursday Morning at 6:30 am in Mobile, Alabama. I'm at the super scary "tracks" - I loved the lines in this car. I processed this Photo with Nik Define 2.0, Nik Color Efex 4's define at 20% and I added an Ivory boost from Florabella's latest collection of fun.

2/52 From the Attic

This time of year I spend a lot of time going back and forth to my Attic. Usually, I'm endlessly toting Holiday decorations up there...but they are still up. I've been up there hunting for odds and ends I've stashed there during the so close to being finished-Main Floor Remodel. I brought down all of my cookbooks. I found my missing curtain rods. I uncovered my dust covered college diploma. And in the corner, sticking out of a box...there it was....Mom's Camera Bag.

My Mom got this Canon SLR in 1979 for Christmas. I was Four years old. She didn't let me touch it until 1990. I was so cool.

This Original falling apart bag has seen some better days, but inside that beat down bag...I found all the lens cleaning stuff, the Owners manual and a zoom lens. Wow. My Mom was a 1979 camera rock star. It's easy to see who inspired my love for photography. Thanks Mom.

This week's Ellenburg Photography Project 52 Theme is "From the Attic"...Here's a pull out of my studio for this shot.

You're looking at a saddle stool with a leather storage ottoman {which is full of amazing hats} for my camera holder. I've got a great Black & White Damask backdrop & two soft boxes - one focused on the camera, the other on the backdrop to get a crispy white.
We're only on week two & we've increased our participants to 52 today. I'm really enjoying this group. Big Thanks to all of our participants. Your active participation really makes this project a joy to host. {Doing my Happy Dance}

Week 1, Our Favorites + Week 2 Launch!

Resolution -noun. 1. a formal expression of opinion or intention made. However you define it, it's always on your mind the first week of a new year. Call it habit or call it tradition. It's there looming whether you make them or not. I like them. It's a nice clean way to start the year with a fresh new set of eyes on what is not important. I usually make 5, but I don't always make it to the end of the year. Maybe 2012 is our year to over-achieve!
You guys had some really great resolutions! This week we saw a lot of fitness and eating healthy. But we also saw a lot of time themes, time for fun, and time for yourselves. No matter how you defined your resolution, it feels good to photograph it...kind of makes it stick right there close to home. Nice work.

Week two's theme is "From the Attic"

This is the first SLR I ever used. It's my Mom's and she got it for Christmas in 1979. I found it covered in dust in the original bag - she even had the instruction manual still in there too. It was a great attic find. I've cleaned it up & am letting live in the studio for a while. It's a nice memory of who helped me find my love for photography.

A Visual Resolution...

I'm a visual person. I'm the one always sending text pictures instead of messages. So this year instead of making a list that I'll pile bunch of junk on top of...I took photographs of my goals. I think it will be harder to hide from these. {Especially when I print them}

Twenty Twelve, here's what I've got for you...

Eat Healthy ~ Making good choices about what I eat and try to be consistent with my fitness pal {my new year obsession on the ipad}

Shape up ~ Being Healthy or unhealthy is a choice. I'd like to live forever {with amazing triceps.}

Slow Down ~ My life is moving at warp speed. I refuse to buy one more movie until I watch all these purchased unwatched movies.

Make time for me. Whether it's mastering my new graphic pad {that thing kind of scares me} or getting to route of my OPI obsession {maybe its all those darn cool names or the new Muppet glitter line}. These are some of the mysteries I'm willing to dig into this year and solve.

Embrace an Art Challenge. I went to Photo-Nola last year & I've got this really great portfolio project trapped in my head...I've just got to find my follow-through. It's hiding again.

And on top of all of these great things...I've still got to maintain my title of Super Mom & Amazing Wife. It's going to be a great year. I'm taking it to the next level. Hope you've got your ducks in a row too.

A Great Woman was Born Today.

Today is my Mom's Birthday.

Sondra is more than a Mom. She is my live-in babysitter. She is my Laundry Czar. She is the homework Nazi. She invented 20 Questions with consistent effort. She can bring back to life any plant I accidentally try to kill. She's the best cook I know. She has the biggest heart. And she bought me my first camera. She sent me a letter with $5.00 in it every week while I was away at college - which turned out to be my Friday night cover-charge more often than not (Shhhh!). She still remembers more than she forgets and even though I have to repeat myself more than I like...I wouldn't trade one single day.

I love you Mom.

So what did Mom get for her 64th Birthday? Well, I did bake that fantastic German Chocolate cake. And since she's read 2 books since Christmas, we got her 3 more to work on...Happy Birthday Mom! You are the greatest Mom. Ever.

The Best of 2011, Project 52

What is Project 52? It's a personal challenge to photograph & edit something every week. It means no dust gets to settle on your camera. It's a weekly project that survives illness, vacations and power outages. When I took the challenge, it came at just the right time. I was in a slump. I was photographing the same thing all the time. This project helped me to find the beauty all around me and inspired me to photograph more different things in one year than I ever could have imagined. It also honed in on my favorite thing to photograph, my family. I love watching them grow. And they love seeing these photos framed in our home and in my studio. I love holding freshly framed prints.
Here are a few of my favorites from this year's adventure...

Week 52, Our Favorites...

What life's all about was a fitting final MCP ACTIONS theme to a great year. This time last year, I was in a real slump. A photography slump. This project really helped me jump start what turned out to be an amazing year. Out of all the great things this year, watching my babies grow with my husband outshines any achievement or award. It's the little moments, that you can't recreate. Big Moments are for everyone, the little ones feel like they are just for me.

1/52 Ellenburg Photography-Project 52 - Theme Launch

Welcome to our very first project 52. As of this morning, we are 40 members strong...After completing last year's project 52 challenge, it left me wanting more. I had so many questions. How'd they do that? Where is that shot? How is that shot? Are they using the same software as me? This project 52 will solve a lot of those mysteries and help us to grow as photographers. 2012 is about growing, improving and learning all we can. It's about more than just keeping the dust off our cameras. I heard a great quote this morning, and I don't care how cheesy it is, I'm rolling with it. "This is what you were born to do. Now get out there and do it!"
Week one is something that is on everyone's mind this time of year, Resolution. No matter what's on your list, or how you interpret it, visualize it, and photograph it.
Here's our take on this week's first theme...

This is a pretty simple shot - exercise - it's a popular resolution - brought on easily by the 5 pounds I gained since my birthday and the panic as I'll be in the Bahamas in 38 days. Got to get my sexy on.

You are looking at my lovely in home studio. I've got the weights on a box, on a rug, lit by two softboxes. Shot taken with a 35mm Macro lens. Edited with Photoshop CS4 & Nik's Ultimate Collection. Photo was run through Define 2.0, Viveza 3.0 for increase in structure, followed by Color Efex 4.0 (it's NEW and AWESOME) for Detail extraction.

Birthdays are the BEST.

The day after Christmas, my baby girl turned four years old. It's always exciting to celebrate a birthday, but it's so much more fun when they get so excited about it too. Every Balloon was so amazing. Every gift, was the best gift ever. I even baked the cake myself...however I'm nowhere near ready for a cake wars competition. Enjoy a few shots from our super fun birthday bash.

It was a near perfect day from start to finish. Madison is certainly the spark of life we need to keep us charged up all the year through. She brings so much joy, entertainment and endless questions to our days.

The Two Days of Christmas

The last two days of Christmas are always packed full of excitement. The house is decorated inside and out and everything smells of pumpkin spice and sugar cookies...it's my favorite time of the year. Jeffery was a great addition to our family this year.

We took the kids to visit Santa...always a good idea, just before the BIG day. No new wish list surprises this year. I remember one year, Jackson asked for a train set with Santa - all I could think of was, where is that going to live?
The Bass pro shop has the BEST Santa ever. He asks about school and talks about the importance of listening to your parents & getting along with your siblings - he even talks about how important it is to read every day. I take the kids to see him every year & I can take my fancy camera and snap all the photos I want. These guys ROCK.
Madison asked for a Leap Pad.

Grant asked for a Nintendo 3DS & Pokeman Rumble Blast.

Jackson has decided he's too big to sit in Santa's lap, but not too old to ask for a Nintendo DS too and anything Lego Ninjago.

What a great bunch...

Then we wrote letters...

After Santa's cookies are put out and the reindeer have been fed, and the kids are off to have dreams of sugar plums...Mike and I wrap our final gifts. This year, with the remodel - I should say, we searched the hidden places of the house for our final gifts to wrap. Some took longer to find than others, but we pulled off another fantastic Christmas.

I got Michael an ipad - and yes, I got the most cheesy engraving ever. I'm in gooey love.

And then, I opened an ipad - no clue... a nice sneaky job.

I didn't even know Lego made robots - Mike is so crafty with his gift finding.

Yes, it will toast the Alabama "A" on your toast. This gift was a real hit.

Holiday entertainment.

Madison named this Christmas cat Gwendolyn. I don't know where she comes up with these great animal names.

Mike really surprised me with a cruise to Bahamas. Wow. And he arranged my baby-sitter too. Best husband EVER.

I have a really nice collection of gifts this year that I can't wait to play with. I'm really excited to dig into this graphic design pad. I got some great movies and awesome music and software. It's nice when you get exactly what you want and things you didn't even think of.

And my Mom bought this fun rug for my studio...it's just perfect.

Hope your Christmas was as exciting and eventful as ours. A great day with family. A day to test the limits of my new robot stove, Rosie. A day that could easily be the best day ever. Merry Christmas friends.

The Holiday Card

So, after the photo shoot on the Saturday before Christmas - I whipped up the perfect Christmas card template. I had my cards printed 1 day at Calagaz - and they did a fantastic job & they were mailed out on Tuesday and all made it before Christmas. But I was worried. So...I created a reversible card - both Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Just in case. I liked it so much, I think I'd do it every year. Here's our card...

And every card comes with my Holiday letter - or the Annual update - On the update...I like to put what everyone in our family asked Santa for and what they hope to accomplish next year. It's always a nice letter with a typo or two. Maybe one year I won't be such in a rush that I'll let my very detailed husband proof it for me ... We can only hope.

Our silly photo was a great addition to this year's card - After all, it's who we really are - centered and wacky around the edges - I have so much fun with my family.

Ellenburg Family Christmas Card Photo Shoot...

Taking the annual Christmas Card photograph is always a lot of fun. I like everything about it. Picking out the perfect outfits. Choosing a great location. Creating the perfect template for a wonderful send out. But if I had to pick on thing to change, I'd take my shots earlier...but you know when you're photographing other families too...you either do your shots first or last...this year I was last last - but with low drama.
We took our photographs in my front yard. It's one of my favorite places to shoot, it's gorgeous. I'm happy to announce, that at this year's shoot, the threats for smiles were at a minimum. No one cried. We still included a pet. And I only had to say, "Can you see the camera at all?" only once. All in all a great photo shoot. I even let Jackson take a few shots. That kids got skillz.

Week 51, Our Favorites...

"The Best way to spread Christmas Cheer, is singing loud for all to hear" Holiday Cheer is contagious this time of year. A candy cane, or a song, or a steaming cup of hot cocoa by a twinkling Christmas tree and I'm on pins and needles anticipating the excitement of Christmas morning. You guys did a great job photographing your holiday cheer. I loved so many things and then I turned a bright shade of green with envy. My remodel is so close, paint touch ups & curtains to hang in my beautiful new kitchen and I'll be holiday ready. It's my turn to host Christmas dinner and my entire family has been banned from visiting since we've started our remodel in August. They are going to be so surprised, and hungry. Christmas eve is my favorite day of the year. Christmas magic is everywhere. Kids are the most behaved ever. Everything smells like sugar cookies or Pumpin spice. And at any moment I could burst into song. (You've been warned)

The Holiday Family Photo. It's a tradition for my family and probably yours too...and I find that as a Photographer, I take mine either really early (Octoberish) or really late (Yesterday). I'm happy to report that no one cried this year and I only had a few minor threats to get the shots I wanted.
If you really want to spice up your holiday family photos, include the family pets and bring a wacky hat.

Week 50, Our Favorites!

Festive Colours are everywhere I look this time of year. The Christmas spirit is certainly out in full force around the towns of our group of photographers. I love looking through the photo stream and enjoying a sneak peek into your lives. This is my favorite time of year, but it's also my busiest. If your days are anything like mine, I'm cramming everything in. Holiday parties, Christmas decorating, Christmas Shopping, Endless gift wrapping and I'm on the very last leg of my main floor remodel. Despite the never-ending to-do lists, it's great that you are finding the time to squeeze this group into your week. Your Festive Colour shots are impressive, and it seriously made me feel under-decorated, so I'll be trying to catch up this week. {Big Smiles!}

As for the Ellenburg Photography photo of the week, I went with something a little different. If you follow my blog, you know I spent last weekend in New Orleans for PhotoNOLA. I really struggled with my "Festive Colours" theme this week for project 52. We've never really done something so similar two weeks in a row. I was festive coloring out last week. This week, I've been in a black and white mood as I rock out my New Orleans shots. But back to Mr. Crab...Mr. Crab is a festive color that can be seen year round in Tasty New Orleans. The bold colors and tasty smells are only two of my favorite things about exciting New Orleans.

This weekend I was invited to attend Photo Nola with a local group of Photographers from the Eastern Shore Camera Club. We rented a 15 Passenger Van and spent a wonderful day looking at photography portfolios by Photographers from all over the country and got to soak in the sights, sounds and tasty smells of New Orleans.
When I signed up to attend, I had no idea about any of this. Photo Nola really celebrates the artsy side of photography that I always find fascinating. If you pulled out my portfolio, it's very bland by comparison. It a pure reflection of my work, Portrait Photography. But I was so wow'd by these guys. I left Photo Nola so inspired.
Here I am...exhausted after a full day in New Orleans, but bubbling with ideas and still rocking my sparkle scarf.

There were 65 Participants in the Portfolio Review. Photographers were eager to answer all my questions. I was so interested in how these Portfolio Ideas come about. These guys are so creative. And what I enjoyed the most, is that these guys are just like me. They are Portrait Photographers too or teachers and instructors building this portfolio in addition to whatever pays the bills. I enjoyed a lot of artists.

Laura was great to talk to. She is from the Houston and the majority of these photos were taken of her daughter with a tiny plastic camera. I loved how dark the tones were in her photographs. Check her out here: lauraburlton.com

Another favorite for me was, Anne George. There was a really great dark fairy tale feel to her work that I just found really fascinating. Most of her photographs are of the same young girl. Really great stuff. Check her out at: www.AnnGeorgePhotography.com

Sarah's work was also different. Everything she photographed was from the deep dark storage rooms of the Anniston Museum of Natural History. She had a lot of creepy dead birds to work with. Check her stuff out at: Sarahcusimanomiles.com

Nancy had a real artistic view of nature. I called it Panned Nature. {Darn you panning, if gives me such a headache.} The colors are so bold. I liked it. Check her out at: www.NancyFulton.com

Week 49, Our Favorites!

Traditions are a hearty bunch. Some are passed down for as long as we can remember, like trimming a tree and stuffing stockings. Some are created so we can pass new things down to our children in hopes that they will continue to pass them down when they grow into their own families. When I was a little girl, our Christmas was quite modest. But my Mom & Dad had this ridiculously huge candle that my Mom only lit on Christmas day. My brother and I took turns blowing it out. I remember, in college, it was just wax and a plate. It was not an ordinary tradition, but we looked forward to it every year. This week's MCP Action's Project 52 Challenge explores these old and new traditions. It was a delight to peek into your lives this week. I loved seeing all the wonderful traditions that you are sharing. Also this week, I was inspired by your Elf on a Shelf tradition and picked one up for my family. "Jeffrey" has been a wonderful addition to our family.

So what was this year's 2011 new Nutracker? He arrived on my birthday, from my thoughtful children. I've always wanted a Roll Tide Nutcracker.

49/52 Indiana Christmas

Traditions. Everyone has them, especially at the holidays. I like to do all the "Normal" Holiday stuff. We trim a tree. We stuff Stockings. We leave Cookies for Santa & feed the Reindeer. We always take photos with Santa and we Always take a family portrait before Christmas. I collect two things. White Dinnerware (Seriously I'm sick with it) and Holiday Nutcrackers. I only have the Nutcracker Army out at Christmas and I get at least one new one every year. Big Ones, Small Ones, Sparkly ones. I love them. This is an all time favorite - Indiana Jones.

It's nice to curl up with my babes by the the light of the Christmas tree. There is something magical about this time of year. Maybe it's because it's nice to reflect on a great year or maybe it's the hope of the new year to come. Either way, it's always my favorite time of year. Everyone seems a little happier at Christmas time. I hope you're enjoying it too.

Becky & Steven, Engaged :-)

If I could only use two words to describe my adventure with Becky & Steven, it would be, Nose Kisses. Seriously, and plenty of them too. Couples always seem a little bit more in love trimmed by sparkling Christmas lights and endless mistletoe. Becky and Steven were no exception. They were bubbling with Wedding Plans and Holiday Plans. I bet right now, they are bubbling with Roll Tide Plans. :-) It was a delight to be around them. Their love is the gooey kind of love that is infectious, you know that "forever-love" that you can't wait to stand next to. They are such a fun couple. "Twinkle, Twinkle" was indeed a fun theme this week for MCP Actions' Project 52. It was fun to see our photographers around the globe in the holiday spirit. This is indeed my favorite time of year. Usually, my home is decked out in Christmas Spirit both inside and out, but this year is still stuck in the protective plastics and endless boxes associated with an amazing Main Floor remodel. We're getting closer...and I'm hoping to have my hidden stashes of unwrapped gifts packaged and under the tree by next week. Finger's crossed.

And now, on to the Ellenburg Photography photograph of the week. Ever since my birthday last Saturday, I've been down with a cold. It's been the pits, but I did manage to sneak out and take this shot, while heavily medicated on a variety of cough syrups. It is a shot of the holiday street lights in downtown Mobile, Alabama. I'm on the mend, almost better today...and it's a good thing, it's Mr. Ellenburg's Birthday. Just in time, I was tired of being his "older" Woman.

48/52 "Like a Diamond in the Sky"

Twinkle, Twinkle. A great theme this week to get us all in the holiday spirit. To really awake my Christmas Spirit, I watched the Movie, "Elf" twice. And then when I was just psyched up enough to go out there and find my Twinkling shot...the Flu found me. RATS. So, I was down, Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday and today, Thursday. By Thursday, I was ready to put "self-healing" non-sense on the back burner with some encouragement of my husband. He said things like, "Hey are you gonna be sick forever?" He has a way with words. So off to the Doctor, and 2 shots in the bum, some amazing cough syrup and a z pack day one...I found this.

For fun. It's not night time. And of course I'm using my all time favorite 8-point star filter. And I edited it from my "sick bed" Hoping to be on the mend for tomorrow's Friday Fun.

The Last Minute.

I'm a last minuter. {This Drives Mike Nuts} It's Not because I love the thrill of seeing if I can make it just before the last possible second, but because my wheels are turning. I'm plotting it out. I'm psyching myself up for the challenge. When I found out I was doing the cover for the Alabama Bride Quarterly publication, I was excited. And when excited ran out, I was nervous. Then came the stress of sorting out and picking just the best shots. I narrowed down again and again. Then found out...there was no room for the Magazine logo above my brides. Oh NO. Then came panic.
I like a tight shot. That's my style and I rock it out. When I have a great background, I usually take it horizontal. But hey, future tip for the future magazine cover that you may have one day ~ Editors like a roomy vertical. Surpise!
So I thought about it for a day. {Well, almost a day}
I really liked this shot - blame my love for the color wheel, but this shot of Maria really has something great going on.

I polled my amazing Facebook Fans & they loved this one too. Then I had a liberating moment. So what if I didn't have the perfect shot right out of the camera. I'm an artist with a passion for all things Photoshop. So...I removed the bokeh'd powerline, extended the sky and minimized a little wind. And Wham, we've got a cover.

Then magically, All my stress faded into the happy dance.
Reminder: Never give up. If you know it's right, you can find a way to make it amazing!

Sun, Sand & the Morans

When I'm asked to photograph at the beach {any Beach} - I'm immediately transported to my happy place. I love everything about the beach. That great beachy Smell, Squishing between my toes, rolling waves, creepy seagulls...yep all of it. So, when Kristy asked me to photograph her family, how could I resist? I just adore the Moran boys. I photographed little Aaron on his first birthday on a railroad track and his new baby brother just a few months ago when he was just born. They are growing so fast. Documenting growing families in fun places is just one of the many perks of this job. Greatest Job Ever!

Gone Fishing

There is something magical about the beach. Maybe its the sound of the crashing waves, or maybe its squishing the sand between my toes. I've always loved the beach. It was a pleasure to be asked to photograph a beach fishing trip between a tiny boy and his Great Grandfather in Pascagoula, Mississippi. As we get older, we learn to appreciate all the wonderful stories and great adventures we had with our Grand-parents. When I reflect fondly on these times, I never feel like I have enough photographs with my Grandparents. Photographing something fun like this is a real treasure. MCP Action's week 48 theme of "Twinkle Twinkle" will certainly put us all in the Christmas Spirit. There are plenty of holiday items that twinkle. But let's not forget Twinkling eyes or Twinkle Toes or Twinkling stars. There are plenty of great ideas out there waiting to be found. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
2011 is sneaking past us, there are so few weeks to get out there and be daring and bold - don't stop pushing yourself. Don't take the shot to meet the minimum requirements of participation. You are better than that. We're all busy, but not too busy to stop learning and growing. I'm so proud to be a part of this group and to see how far we have come week to week. Keep it up!

So long, Thirty-Five.

When I reflect upon my 35th year, I smile. When your birthday follows Thanksgiving, you have already realized all the blessings that made this year so special. So many wonderful things are happening, all at once, it's hard not to smile. I awoke to Michael watching me sleep so he could be the first to tell me Happy Birthday - our kids are sneaky and everyone wants the first "Happy Birthday" - that's how we roll at the Ellenburg House. Madison bursts in at 6:30 am for the 2nd "Happy Birthday" still rubbing sleepy eyes but was eager to call me the birthday girl. It was sweet. HB's were later followed by Jackson then Grant, and lots of great phone calls and texts. When I was asked what I wanted for my birthday, it was simple. "I want to stay here all day and enjoy this hard work" - referring to the main floor remodel that has been going on since the last week in August. There was cake, pizza, amazing gifts and college football. What more could the birthday girl ask for?

The guys did a really nice job on the cake.

And Birthday Cake without ice cream is simply unheard of.

A thoughtful gift from my babes - Yep, I have a collection of nutcrackers that I pull out of the attic every Christmas. This one is just perfect.

My Mom did her best to fill up my Kitchen's new wine rack. A great idea.

Michael continues to go over the top with his amazing gifts, not one lens, but 2. So Awesome!

A real treat is that my birthday starts what is commonly known as "My 8 days of reign" - I am exactly 8 days older than Michael, and he lets me boss him around for the next 8 days. This year he whined like he says I do. That seems inappropriate. I love these eight days.

Sparkle Shoes, Turkey Shaped Butter & Being Thankful

Blessings are a funny thing. It's so nice to have them, but sometimes it's so easy to overlook them. Each year, I try to tally them up, but always fall short. There are small blessings and Big Blessings. How small is too small to count? (Should I count that I'm thankful Avon didn't discontinue the "Brown Sugar" Glazeware? Seriously, I want to count everything) But when I do start counting, I always run out of fingers to count them on. And I think that when I run out of fingers, that counts as a blessing too, I mean who ever thought there would be so many. It's good to be thankful. Good for the soul, nice to remember how fortunate you are, it's a great way of avoiding the "down in the dumps" So...here it goes {I'll try to narrow it down to only Eleven for 2011}.

1. Sparkle Shoes

I'm so thankful that my little Tom Boy-Girl is falling in love with such girly things. She loves all things glitter & sequins and finally let me paint her nails. We painted them new OPI muppets Silver. She's finally becoming the dress up doll I've always wanted. Yeah, me.

2. Turkey Shaped Butter

It's nice to slow down and look at life through the eyes of a child. An easy thing, when you've got 3 running around. Turkey Shaped Butter is always a hit at Thanksgiving. My SIL always makes sure it's on the table. I'm not sure if it's the extreme details of the butter sculpture or the smell of buttery goodness or the fact that everyone wants the head, but it's just good fun for our holiday. I'm thankful for the excitement that such a tiny detail brings out of all the work that goes into creating a wonderful Thanksgiving.

3. Great In Laws

I'll bet this is neglected on a lot of top tens, but my SIL is a real life saver. My SIL & I usually rotate Thanksgiving & Christmas holiday hosting duties. This year was clearly my turn to host Thanksgiving, but my home is in no shape for festive events. The remodel has taken a life of its own. I still have no functioning appliances, but I do have them. So, while I was pasting stainless steel tiles as the new back spash of my dream kitchen, my Sister In Law & young Niece were cooking and baking up a feast. I'm so thankful for the wonderful traditional meal she creates and the warm welcome she continues to offer.

4. Great Children

It's easy to take great grades and good manners for granted as an expectation. I am always so proud of my boys & my baby girl. They are thoughtful and considerate. I'm thankful for the loving joy they bring to my life.

5. Photography

Freezing time & special moments with my camera make me feel like a true artist. I never want to take that feeling for granted. Getting that perfect shot is really a magical moment. I love the way it makes me feel. I know that my photographs are appreciated. I'm thankful I can share & teach what I learn to others.

6. Share you Blessings

I love to talk about my blessings. We wrote them down this year. I'm thankful that we're teaching that to our children. Some people don't realize that you think the little things they do are a blessing. Sometimes being thankful is just saying, "Thank You"

7. Sandy Toes

There is really something amazing about the water rushing up on your feet as they squish in the sand. Standing next to the crashing waves, and looking out into the vast ocean makes you feel so small. Its nice to keep yourself in check. I'm thankful that I live close enough to the beach that I can be reminded often.

8. Good Movies

I love that my husband has a borderline sick obsession for keeping his gynormous movie collection in alphabetical order. I love to run away inside a great movie. This movie is a treat. And it was easy to find. Thank you Michael.

9. The return of Glitter Nail Polish

Welcome back sparkles. It's nice to be a girl. I like wearing glitter. Next year, If they bring back unicorn tee's I'll be in heaven.

10. The dream come true Home Remodel

It's one thing to have all these ideas floating around in your head about dreamy new hardwood floors or a shiny new kitchen, but to go all out and spend the family vacation fund on the August Electrolux sale is another one. The icing is doing the entire remodel yourself, is another. I'm thankful for the things I've learned, and for the things I didn't want to learn at all but now know.

11. Michael

I'm so thankful to have someone I'm just crazy about to share my life with. I know if I wanted it, he'd lasso the moon. Just like George Bailey. He makes our house a home, helps me to raise responsible well mannered babes and cheers for me while I chase my photography dreams. As another year passes, I'm thankful that we got to share it together.

Sneak Peek ~ Becky & Steven, Engaged

I'm in love with LOVE. When you're a woman madly in love, it's easy to spot another in same condition. As I approached Cathedral Square Sunday Afternoon, I zeroed right in on the couple riding cloud nine. It was Becky & Steven, and I knew they were waiting for me. I enjoy photographing engaged couples dripping with that ooohey goooey love. It's that contagious infection you want to be around. It smells of spring roses and feels like riding on the feris wheel for the first time. These two were quippy and funny. They couldn't keep their eyes off each other. {Swoon} It's the real deal.
As we hit a few of my favorite spots, we got to know each other. We share a love for tropical islands, remodel stories, and always root for the Tide to Roll. If they also adored lip gloss & had an affection for protein bars, we could be kindred spirits :-)

Sneak Peek ~ Fishing with Great Grandpa

I've never been asked to photograph a fishing trip. No one would turn down the opportunity to photograph special moments between little people and Great Grandparents. It was so cute to watch them cast out, and sit and wait and hope for the big one to hook the line. There was no big one, but it was indeed a big time enjoyed by both young and old. Special little moments are what life is all about.

Water. Pondering this new week's theme, I thought about all the water we see each day. Sinks, Showers, Bottles, Rain, Rivers, Beaches...the possibilites are endless. Fortunately for me, Saturday morning, I was driving to a beach that I'd never been to. I was traveling to Pascagoula, Mississippi to photograph a wonderful family. It's the beach, there's tons of water. Here's what I came up with... I call it, "A battle of Wits"

Will it rain today? The looming question as I left drizzling wet Creola for the beaches of Pascagoula, Mississippi. The closer I got to that beach...the better the day was looking. Hooray. {I LOVE going to the beach} This is the first time I photograph the entire Moran family. I've photographed both boys. Aaron, on a railroad track on his first birthday and Evan, just a few months ago at one month old. They have both gotten so big. Watching babies grow, is one of the best parts of my job. "Over the Top" proved to be a fun week at MCP Action's 52 Week Challenge. We saw everything, except "a cherry on top" - which honestly, I thought I'd see. We traveled, I saw Maui & the Grand Canyon. We saw lots of tasty kitchen treats {which truly made me jealous b/c my kitchen is still under contruction}. I got to meet your families. One of my favorite things about this challenge is getting to know my new friends. Each photo is a sneak peek into your life, or into your mind. You guys are growing and learning so much each week - it's so much fun for me to see what you will do this week. I know it's the REAL challenge to choose only one photo, but know that you guys area really doing fantastic. Remember, the year is almost over. If you want to try something wacky - a new editing technique, a new shooting style - do it. We only get better with practice and we can only learn from mistakes. Get out there and goof something up. :-)

This past weekend I took a mini break to the coast of Mississippi. It was so wonderful to catch up with my college bestie, and sorority Big Sis - she was so kind to treat me to a wonderful weekend at the Hard Rock & the STYX concert. It was easily a top 10 kind of weekend, big thanks Dodge!

It's the Little Things.

If I told you that my main floor remodel wasn't making me a little crazy, it would be a lie. And when you add a sleepless night - it's a double whammy of a day. When I'm having one of these days, I full on expect that you are too. I look for nothing extra.
Yesterday, at the grocery store, the monthly magazine stacker was hard at work. He's got 2 pallets stacked 5 high and 4 deep with grey totes packed with all the latest and greatest reads for the Month of December. I asked if the new Vogue was somewhere in there. He said, "Yes, Somewhere..." I just lumped that in with the rest of my day and was moving on, but he said..."Hold up. Let me see if I can find it."
4 Totes later...He Did.

He could have let me walk away. But he didn't. Random acts of kindness are still alive. I was so appreciative.
Little things matter. Period.

Week 45 ~ our Favorites!

Good Morning. I'm writing to you this morning from the Hard Rock in Biloxi. I'm on a 2 day mini-break with my College Sorority Besties to shop & catch the STYX concert. {Amazing music, those guys still HAVE it.} You Weekend / Monday posters are the brave ones this week. It took me some time to wrap my arms around this weeks theme, and if I'd have only waited until say Thursday...I think I could have created something truly magical. As for the Ellenburg Photography photograph of the week, I had every intention of going straight Harry Potter. First, I love all things Harry Potter (go ahead and laugh) and I have the full on costumes from my Halloween adventures! But the latest Middle school book craze has swept my home. If you have a middle schooler, this book is an excellent giftable. They love it and there is a part two . I'm sure book three is being written as we speak. Here is some of the interesting paper folding adventures happening in the Ellenburg Home.

Why I print my Digital Files.

It's easy to have hard drive after hard drive of family memories. We've all fallen into the, "Just one more Terra Byte" Mentality. I do it too, but I print my favorites from all events. Then I put them in an album. But if they were extra special, I enlarge them and hang them on the wall. I've always had a wall that I rotated out photos on. It became known as THE wall and I have heard, "Hey look! I made the wall!" It's not that serious, but I'm always flattered.
I took this photograph off my wall yesterday. {for the on going awesome kitchen remodel} I've had this photo on a wall somewhere for the past Seven years.

It's just a snapshot taken at the beach with an Olympus Point & Shoot. I'm wearing THE goofiest hat EVER {I think I still have it} and I even have sand on my nose, but I love this photo. When I see it, it reminds me of how far I've come in my life. The girl in this photo does not have it together. She's a newly single Mom. She is stressed out. She's worried about all the little things involved with raising two boys while working Sixty hours a week. But she's still strong and she's not hiding from whatever life is ready to throw her. This girl is still light years away from finding the amazing love of her life, Michael.
When I see this photo, it reminds me to slow down and be right "here" wherever here is. It reminds me that I am a strong person with a giant passion for this life. And if I have to move a mountain, I think I can.
Photographs mean different things to different people. It's art. When you ask Grant what he thinks about this photo, he says. "I remember that day the beach, Mom. It was the BEST day EVER."
You know, it was a really great day.

45/52 Origami Yoda

This week's MCP Project 52 theme was "A Book Title" - so do I re-create an awesome book title? or do I take a book somewhere cool? or do I try my hand at some old-school paper folding? This Yoda book has been the hot topic of conversation between my boys for 2 weeks. Yoda this and Darth Paper that. So I picked it up. It's by Tom Angleberger.

Its written very Wimpy-Kid book like. So, there's this kid named Dwight. He's in middle school and not cool. Until he makes this Origami Yoda that starts giving out super wise advise. No one else can make a Yoda like Dwight and he won't show them how. But he's now cool. And since not everyone likes Yoda...there is a sequel.

{Yes, there is a lot of paper folding going on in the Ellenburg House} Bottom line: I love that the kids enjoy reading books. And this book is worth 3 prized AR points at school. So read on I say.

TIP: A great way to make plain old origami photograph nicely is a little HDR. Not a lot, just a little. Looking forward to seeing everyone's book titles!

An Awkward Dinner Moment

Last week, Camera South held it's Annual Awards dinner, I was fortunate enough to attend. It's always a good time to hang out with other local photographers and artists. I can ask all the photography questions that I'm burning to know, like this week's question was - "Do you LOVE the Shootsac?" I'm always in love with the next life changing gadget and right now, I'm pretty sure the Shootsac could be that item.
We sat at a long put together banquet table surrounded by Photography friends and their Spouses. Michael offered to join me, partly for support and partly because we don't have a kitchen.
With Michael on one side of me, that left the other side for Dick Dixon. I'd never met Dick before tonight but was totally fascinated with his sailing adventures.

Dick Dixon has been a sailor for over 20 years and is a frequent writer for many national sailing magazines, he writes and shoots events all over the coasts - this particular article was one of the many Florida Regattas. I think I'm completely in love with the idea of sailing around the world or maybe just around Mobile bay. It was great to pick Dick Dixon's head about all these sailing details and was thankful I didn't bore him to death my endless questions. Ps I started following him on Flickr too...but that is neither here nor there.
The only award this evening went to our outgoing president. A real nice guy. {who by the way answered my burning question last month of "Do I want the Wacom pad?" He said "yes you do".}

And it would indeed be a mistake for me not to mention that I NEVER turn down Key Lime Pie. Even if you made it for the first time and you were pretty sure you did it wrong and you half-heartily offered me a slice, I'd still try it. Mmmmm.

So, after I enjoyed my Grilled Chicken with Portebella Mushrooms and asked Dick at least 25 more questions, I reached into my bag to pull out my prized camera to snap a few shots of the evening, and realized....OMG...

The new lens that was in my B&H want list that disappeared last week, that I accidentally opened with my mail, that is supposed to be my birthday present, that coincidentally wasn't wrapped yet, that I happened to take on my afternoon shoot with me was on my camera. And my amazing husband/gift buyer was sitting next to me. {AWKWARD.} Will he give me the stink eye? or worse, will he return my 25mm super wide fixed lens?
Michael just smiled and asked, "Do you like it?" He later asked me to box it back up, but he hasn't followed up on it yet. I'm sure he'll get around to it. I'm sure I will too :-)

If there was a single word to describe Romina, it would be passionate. But I don't think that you should forget energetic or determined or detailed. When I met Romina, she was dressing and speaking a language that I was sure I couldn't respond in. She was very detailed with her dressing, and maintained a serious look in the mirror while engaging in mixes of her native tongue, Romanian and some German. Romina, Romishka to some, is a such a true beauty that she could have easily been gorgeous in 5 minutes; but it was fun to photograph her primping.

Tim & Romina elected to get married at the local courthouse earlier that week. The event I photographed was a Wedding party and an introduction to Tim's Family. In a situation where that could have been awkward, Romina's passion for life, love and Tim took over. Each time Romina was spotted she was giving out hugs, pulling all ages to the dance floor and force-feeding the traditional wedding foods of Romania & Germany to all guests. This does in include me, she will not take no for an answer, before you knew it, it was right in your mouth.

I don't know what it was, but there was this one AMAZING dessert that was a gorgeous triangle of puff pastry or filo bread filled with a warm cheese, cherries and a spicy pepper - whatever it was - I was in LOVE. Any idea what it was? Don't ever pass it up.

Tim & Romina met in downtown Pensacola and elected to shoot their Bridal / Groomal shots on the beach. We were fortunate to be blessed with a gorgeous sunset and no wind, a small wedding miracle.

After a short stop at Starbucks...we were on the way to Tim & Romina's home for an amazing Wedding party.

Tim & Romina's home was a beautiful backdrop for this fun party. It is decorated from head to toe and was adorned with white flowers and white balloons. It just screamed wedding party, complete with DJ, and a dance floor. They really thought of everything.

Romina said that in her country everyone dances at the wedding party. Everyone. And she meant it. At some point, every guest, young and old hit the dance floor. Her persistence was impressive.

As a fun treat and a reminder, when you have a party in October, you never know who will be ringing your door bell - this attractive couple made Tim & Romina's party the first stop on a night of Halloween party adventures.

As the party closed, the couple released 150 balloons in the air. Each balloon signified a wish for each happy year together. {Awwwwe} At the end of the day, it's about being happy together. Romina makes Tim happy. These guys ooze the lovey-dovey dream we all have. Many Congratulations to Tim & Romina. It was an honor to document one of the most important days of your lives, and thank you for allowing me into your home and life that beautiful October evening. Much Appreciation, Daphne.

Week 44 ~ Our favorites!

Muted Tones. What the heck are muted tones? Webster says that Muted Tones are bold colors reduced by the color grey - think pastel. You can easily achieve Muted Tones with a variety of Photoshop savvy skills. You can also go for a real challenge and find your muted tones. Muted tones are easily found in the early morning when we'd all prefer to be still snug and warm in our beds. You can also hunt for them after a rain or snow or in the fog. No matter how you found your muted tones this week, I really enjoyed looking at them all. As the end of the year draws near, I hope you are not only enjoying the challenge but are challenging yourself. Don't just go with the easy, rock out the Hard.

And as for the Ellenburg Photography photo of the week, we went straight fair and Photoshop fun. Mobile, Alabama has a traveling fair this time of year, every year. It's great family fun - 4-H animal events, carnival rides, cheesy games and super odd things to eat. I especially enjoy the Pineapple ice cream. I confess to trying the "Fried Oreo" cookies, which were pretty good. I only wish I had room for the red velvet funnel cake. The fair is awesome and I fully realize how super FAT that sounded. :-)

MCP ACTION'S Week 45 is going to be "Book Title" - a little constrained with a singular title theme, but should give us all the green light to get out there and show your title in some strange wacky place or to "act out" the title all together like some wild game of Charades. How ever you choose to photograph & select & narrow down your one choice for your entry, I can't wait to see it!!

This week's reminder is to slow down and enjoy life. This is the only 2011 you have and it's almost over. Enjoy lifes little moments. I had an hours worth of interuptions from my little Ellenburgs while writing this morning...little wonderful interruptions...Like tie my shoe, Help me put on my socks, I can't reach my bowl....soon they won't ask me to reach the high things or need help putting on socks and tying shoes. It's nice to feel needed. Someone needs you everyday. Embrace those warm feelings.

Sneak Peek ~ Tawanna

The rain poured all day in buckets at a time. This is not unusual fall weather in Mobile, Alabama. Fortunately, the skies cleared just in time for a great adventure with Tawanna. Tawanna is represented Bishop State in the Annual Coronation Ceremony. She sparkled from head to toe and it was a delight to photograph her. Enjoy a quick sneak peek.

I always love shooting in the streets of downtown Mobile. Traffic was light and I love that I was able to capture the golden top of the Cathedral.

A Muted tones theme this week meant that I was going to have to get up really super early and catch one of these famous foggy Alabama mornings or that I could work my Photoshop savvy skills. I went with the latter {not that I wasn't up early} :-)
Enjoy one of my favorite photographs from the fair. A traveling fair is a great place to get some colorful photographs and some tasty treats. I'm in for the Pineapple ice creams, but confess that I did try the fried Oreo Cookies - seriously, not bad stuff.

Spooky Fun, Ellenburg Style

My Halloween costume is usually top secret. Seriously, I won't tell anyone. But as it happens, my family usually themes up, and everyone knew they were going to be little wizards...so it was only a matter of time before my costume was outed. I'm always wicked on Halloween, I'm so good all year, it's my only time to get all goth-tastic. Belletrix was a wonderful compliment to my date, the handsome Dark Lord or he who is not to be named.
